Our building
In 2007 the building at 278 Duckworth Street was repaired, renovated, and expanded. The project was made possible with funding from Cultural Spaces Canada, Department of Innovation, Trade & Rural Development, City of St. John’s, and many wonderful people who supported our fundraising activities. The new and renewed studio spaces maintain all of the building’s original character from it’s era as the British Bank of North America (est. 1849).
A prized part of the city’s built heritage, this Italianate-style structure is believed to be an early work of well-known Halifax architect David Stirling who designed many Halifax buildings in the 1860s. The top three floors were elaborate living quarters for the resident bank manager. It is easy to see why it has status as both a municipal and a provincial historic site and designated a National Historic Site in 2001.
