Rug Hooking: An Introduction

Years ago hooked mats were found in almost every Newfoundland home. Now you can learn the skills and techniques to recapture the tradition. This hands on class will show you how to attach burlap to a frame, transfer your design, select and cut fabrics, and learn how to hook your choice of design. You’ll learn the basics while completing a small rug/wall hanging of your choice. Instruction will also cover finishing techniques and hanging methods. Register early; this class is one of our most popular.

Rug Hooking: Beyond the Basics

This class is designed to help those with some experience rug hooking to further develop their skills.  Instruction will cover choosing the right fabrics for your design, how to create dynamic colour, highlights, shadows, textures and value changes.  Individuals will be challenged at their own level of experience and will determine the class content based on their needs and wants.

On Loom Weaving

Weaving is a magical process and is the passion of instructor Pearl Fifield. In this course you’ll design and complete your choice of project (scarf, placemats, or a wall hanging). Learn the step by step process of weaving on a floor model loom, wind a warp, set-up, colour selection of weft threads, and simple patterns (plain weave, and twill).

Stained Glass: An Introduction

In this course, Paul Drover introduces you to the craft of stained glass. Participants will lean the process step by step, as Paul guides you through transferring your design to the glass, cutting the interlocking pieces. Students will then lean to polish the glass and solder it using the copper foil technique. Gain hands on experience while completing your choice of attractive sun catcher. No experience required, but register early, it’s a popular class.

Stained Glass: Intermediate

If you’ve tried stained glass in the past, and are interested in furthering your skills using the copper foil technique, then this is the class for you. Paul Drover will guide you through the steps to create your own design, and depending on your individual level of experience, show you the techniques to create three dimensional works from colourful glass. You may bring your own pieces of coloured glass, or purchase it from the instructor.

Jewellery Basics

You’ll be surprised at just how easy it is to get started making your own jewellery. In this introductory class Gina will show you how to get going. Instruction will include how to use glass beads and semi precious stones to make your own one-of-a-kind pieces; and how to use crimps and touch. Students will learn the basics of jewellery making and be given ample time to work on projects and to develop ideas under expert guidance.

Knitting Basics

Can’t knit? No worries! We’ll teach you. Industrial Sewing

Industrial sewing machines increase your proficiency and speed of sewing. In this introductory class, Barry Buckle will teach you about the parts and maintenance of an industrial machine.  With a “learn by doing” approach, a small production project will be completed by the group and you will gain industrial sewing experience using the straight stitch, walking foot, chain stitch, and serger. This class is suitable for someone in the craft or fashion industry looking to improve the quality of their work and to increase the quantity of work produced.  Also an ideal class for anyone planning to attend fashion school; or sewing in an industrial setting.

Quilting: An Introduction

Learn the basis of machine quilting with instructor/quilter Sheila Ford as she covers all elements of quilting. Participants will create a lap sized quilt using the “Stack the Deck” pattern. Concepts covered include cutting with a rotary cutter, ruler and mat; making the blocks, sewing blocks together, adding borders; layering, pinning and quilting, and finishing off with binding and a label. Once you’re able to create a lap sized quilt, you’ll be more than prepared to complete a quilt to your desired size.

Quilting: Paper Piecing

Paper piecing, also known as foundation piecing, is a traditional quilting technique that has been revived by today’s quilters. Instructor/quilter Sheila Ford will introduce you to this basic technique of block quilting and guide you through two paper piecing patterns. It’s an easy technique that simplifies the creation of perfect quilt blocks. Basic knowledge of sewing machine operation is required.

Serger Workshop

Do you dread to thread your serger? Don’t put it away; get it up and running with this workshop. Learn machine maintenance, parts and accessories, how to thread your machine, balance the tension, and stitch techniques for various fabrics. Family Papermaking Workshop

Learn the step by step the process of making your very own sheets of paper. We‘ll also take an artistic approach to papermaking and experiment with how natural fibres (flowers, grass, leaves, corn husk, pineapple tops, onion and garlic skins…) can be transformed into works of art. Participants will learn fibre preparation, make various pulp baths and pull sheets of unique papers. Bring along inclusions of wall paper, pressed plants and flowers, feathers, string, lace, fabrics etc. (flat thin objects that won’t be damaged by water) as well as any fibrous plants you would like to try. No previous experience is required.

Felting Workshop

In this one day workshop with Pearl Fifield, you’ll discover the satisfying technique of needle felting. Unlike knitting and sewing needles, a felting needle has tiny barbs running down its sides. Using the needle you’re able felt dry wool-fibres together. In this workshop participants will experiment with a variety of materials, working in two-dimension on a piece of recycled wool fabric.

Printmaking Workshop

Experiment and gain hands-on experience while you create a series of your own original artworks. Learn techniques for carving, by creating relief ‘plates’ using styrofoam, linoleum and easycut, also explore monotrace and monotype which are a drawing and painterly type techniques. Learn how to ink your ‘plate’ and print your artwork by transferring the ink onto paper by using a wooden spoon, barren and an etching press. No previous experience required

Artistry Workshop: An Introduction to Design & Composition

We all have an artist inside us. Learn how to express yourself creatively. You’ll learn about color theory, composition, light, shadow, tone, texture and value using contour lines, cross hatching, stippling, and positive and negative space. Through examples, demonstration, handouts and hands-on experience, participants will use these techniques to render images using drawing pencils, pastels, watercolours and acrylic paints.  This one-day class is a great way to see if you’d like to do more art classes – or use the day as a refresher of skills and a source of inspiration for your creative work.

Book Arts & Drawing

In the first part of this workshop participants will learn how to make a simple accordion style book that will then be used for sketching. Students will learn about tonal values, textures, creating focus and balance in compositions, and how to observe and record by completing a series of quick studies. Emphasis is placed on experimentation with different types of drawing materials including drawing pencils, charcoal, graphite, ink, pastels, pencil crayons and markers.
