Art Classes


Acrylics: An Introduction (Full!)

This is a great class for anyone who always wanted to paint. You will learn the basics of paint application and colour theory while working from images and still life. A great class to take with a friend.

6 Sundays, 2 – 5 pm , January 24 – February 28, 2010

Oil Painting (Full!)

Learn the basics of oil painting in this class with Greg Bennett. Learn how to get started, and safely work with oil paints. Instruction will cover how to mix the paint, brush care, application methods and colour therory. Students will create paintings working from a photo and from a still life. You will be shown how to apply paint in an archival fashion and how to properly varnish your paintings.

Art: An Introduction

Get in touch with your inner artist this winter. “Art: An Introduction” is a low stress class that will help you explore your creative abilities. Instructor/artist Laura Buchholz will introduce you to the skills and techniques drawing, painting, print making, and collage as you experiment with a variety of artistic materials and media. You may just surprise yourself and create a masterpiece (or several). Materials and supplies included.

Drawing: An Introduction (Full!)

Drawing is the foundation of visual arts, and in this introductory class you will learn the basics. You will begin by training your eye to see lines and shapes, then explore value and space. This class is perfect for those with a general love and interest in sketching or drawing who wish to improve their technical skills. Class instruction will focus on experimentation with different types of drawing materials and mediums, including: pencil, graphite, charcoal, and india ink.

The Art of Comic Book Collecting

This is a new course dedicated to the wonderful hobby of comic book collecting. Participants will cover the mechanics of preservation, storage, grading and the history of comic books. Workshop includes a field trip to Downtown Comics on Duckworth Street to study the structure of a comic book shop. All comic book enthusiasts are welcome!

Creative Writing: Graphic Novels and Comic Books

Do you have a story you would like to tell? Try telling it through comics! This creative writing course is designed to get you started. (This course could also be of interest to those who are writing for film as a lot of the same principles apply to both kinds of writing.)

All writing and cartoon enthusiasts are welcome! (YAP and adults)

An acrylics painting class for individuals with some previous experience – an introductory class or experimenting on your own – either way, you’re ready for some professional guidance. Jim Maunder will help you take your work to the next level.

Life Drawing

Learn how to observe and record the human form in this drawing class for a levels of experience. Jim Maunder offers individual and group instruction as participants complete a series of quick studies and sustained drawings. Nude and draped models, male and female, will provide the subject matter.

Intermediate Drawing

Intermediate drawing will build on the skills learned in the intro drawing course. The emphasis will be on drawing from observation. Learning to see more complex lines and shapes while still exploring value and space through the mediums of pencil, charcoal and pen and ink.

Open Studio Times


Rug Hooking Open Studio

Fridays, 7-9 pm, February 5, March 5, April 2, etc…

Join Catherine McCausland on the first Friday evening of the month (7-9 pm) beginning February 5th for a rug hooking open studio. Bring your current rug hooking project and work on it in the company of fellow rug hookers. Catherine will provide help and guidance if you need it… Or treat it as a night out – it’s a great opportunity to meet new people with a common interest and share your enthusiasm for rug hooking and “show-n-tell”.

Fee: $10 (collected by Catherine each open studio evening)


KNIT-WITS a knitting social

on the last Sunday evening of each month

Sundays, 7-9 pm, January 31, February 28, March 28, April 25, etc…

Bring your current project, start a new one or dig out that long forgotten sweater from the depths of your closet… get motivated to knit! And if you’re new knitting, there will be plenty of help available to get you started and trouble shoot knitting difficulties.

Bring along your favourite books, magazines, patterns or fibres for inspiration! We’ll have a cup of tea (and treats if anyone feels like baking), you may also bring your own music for knittin’ and purlin’ …. all in all, it’s a fun night all about knitting (or crochet) …and it’s free!


Comic Jam

Fridays, 7-9 pm, January 8, February 5, March 5, April 2, etc…

Join local cartoonist Wallace Ryan on the first Friday evening of the month (7-9 pm) beginning January 8th for a cartooning open studio. Bring your current project and work on it in the company of fellow cartoon enthusiasts. Wallace will also have different topics of discussion so that each Comic Jam helps budding cartoonists to develop their drawing, lettering, and storytelling skills. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the world of professional cartooning and meet new people with a common interest. Comic Jams are free and welcome individuals with all levels of cartooning experience, young and old.
