One Day Felting Workshop – New addition to workshop schedule!
Join Pearl Fifield for a day of felting fun!!  In the morning you will learn wet felting methods for transforming sheep’s fleece into a base fabric.  In the afternoon you will complete your desgin with dry needle felting techniques to create a  beautiful felted artwork.

Weekend Workshops

Stained Glass: An Introduction

In this course Paul Drover introduces you to the craft of stained glass. You will learn the process step by step. Paul will show you how to transfer your design to the glass and cut the interlocking pieces. Then you will learn to polish the glass and solder it using the copper foil technique. Gain hands on experience while completing your choice of attractive sun catcher. No experience required, but register early, it is a popular class.

Stained Glass: Intermediate
If you have tried stained glass in the past, and are interested in furthering your skills using the copper foil technique then this is the class for you. Paul Drover will guide you through the steps to create your own design, and depending on you individual level of experience show you the techniques to create three dimensional works, from colourful glass. You may bring your own pieces of coloured glass or purchase it from the instructor.

Rug Hooking: Beyond the Basics This student driven class is designed to for those who have tried rug hooking and would like to continue building their skills. Catherine will help to answer your questions, find solutions to problems you may have encountered, and tackle intimidating topics. Instruction will cover choosing fabrics to create dynamic colour, highlights, shadows, textures and value techniques. Students are asked to come with a design in mind or a photo they would like to work from. The design can be figure based, a landscape, or a design of your choice, however it should be challenging to your individual skill level.

On-Loom Weaving
Weaving fabric is a magical process, and it is the passion of instructor Pearl Fifield. In this course you will learn the step by step process of  weaving on a floor model loom, starting with preparing your warp and set up. Once your loom is threaded and your warp set up, you will experiment with colour and texture using plain and twill weave, helping you choose the pattern for your fabric. You will complete your choice of projects, starting with a scarf or wall hanging.

Art Quilt Table Runner

Reclaimed Clothing / Memory Quilt
Do you have a closet full of out-dated clothes that you just can’t weed out? Turn each garment into a patch of a memory quilt that you will cherish for years to come. Your quilt may be completed entirely from recycled clothing or a combination of recycled clothing and new fabric. Some basic machine sewing skills are necessary. The size and design of your memory quilt will depend on the style of the clothing you are reclaiming. Full Size Rail Fence Quilt
An excellent beginner project for first time quilters. The classic Rail Fence Quilt will introduce you to fast cutting using a rotary cutter, and quick sewing methods using strip piecing. Once you learn the basics of Rail Fence quilting you can continue to experiment with colour and design. There are endless layouts to play with, you can stick with a traditional look or vary the design and fabrics to come up with something all our own. The pattern can be easily altered to fit any size bed. Classes are once every two weeks giving you time to complete the steps between each class. Bring your sewing machine from home, or request to use one of ours. Studio time will be arrange for students who require it.

‘Quilted’ Ornaments CANCELLED
Learn this really cool no-sew technique for creating ‘quilted’ Christmas balls. Working from squares of folded cotton fabric, each piece is pinned in place overlapping the previous square to create the desired pattern. Instruction will include working with a rotary cutter, pattern designs, and finishing techniques. You will be surprised by just how easy this project is.

Sewing Classes


Stretch Sewing
Cutting and sewing with stretch fabrics requires special handling and sewing techniques. This introduction to stretch sewing is an excellent starting point. Jessica will show you how to get started making your own dance wear, skating costumes and active wear. Knowing how to work with stretch fabrics creates opportunity for better fitting professional looking garments. Previous sewing experience is required, and experience using a serger is advantageous.

Introduction to Machine Sewing

This short course is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to get started machine sewing. Serger Basics
Do you dread to thread your serger? Don’t put it away, learn how to get it running. Learn machine maintenance, parts and accessories, how to thread your machine, balance the tension, and stitch techniques for various fabrics. Once you have confidence operating your machine Jessica will show you how to sew stretch fabric and you will complete a small project. No previous experience working with a serger required, although some experience working with a sewing machine is required. Please bring your own serger.

Fashion Design: Garment Construction
This class is an opportunity to build on your basic machine sewing skills and start making your own clothes. You will learn the basics of clothing construction as you sew your choice of projects. Jessica will guide you through reading a pattern, cutting, and the basic techniques and methods of sewing garments. This class will also cover zippers, button holes, setting sleeves and finishing techniques for hems. You will complete several fitted garments as you learn to sew with confidence.

Industrial Sewing
Industrial sewing machines increase your proficiency and speed of sewing. In this introductory class Barry Buckle will teach you the parts and maintenance of an industrial machine. As part of instruction a small production project will be completed by the group. Industrial techniques covered include; straight stitch, walking foot, chain stitch and serger. This class is suitable for someone in the craft or fashion industry looking to increase their quality and production or someone planning to attend fashion school, wanting to learn industrial machine operation. Let us know if you are interested in taking this class, and we will schedule a class once we have enough interest.

Do you have the perfect idea for a Halloween costume but don’t know where to begin? Gina Rae will help you translate your idea into the costume of your design. Watermedia Painting

Choose your water based paint and advance your painting skills in this class with Diana Dabinett. Through demonstration and hands-on experience you will learn techniques for achieving a variety of effects and complete a series of paintings. With Di’s expert guidance and feedback, you will learn about the principles of design and composition. Especially suited for continuing students with some previous experience working with water based paints (water colours, acrylics, or gouache).

Oil Painting
Learn the basics of oil painting in this class with Greg Bennett. Learn how to get started, and safely work with oil paints. Instruction will cover how to mix the paint, brush care, application methods and colour therory. Students will create paintings working from a photo and from a still life. You will be shown how to apply paint in an archival fashion and how to properly varnish your paintings.

Craft Classes


Silk Painting
A wonderful opportunity to learn silk painting from visual artist and silk painting expert Diana Dabinett. Learn the techniques and procedures to draw with resist, mix and blend colours, and acheive a variety of effects. Experiment on a silk sampler, then design and paint a silk scarf or wall hanging. This class is suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners and a great choice for those who have enjoyed our two hour workshop.

Felting
Unlike cotton or silk fibers, wool fibers are rough and  hairy.  This property allows you to join the fibers using a process called felting.  In this class you will begin by creating a piece of fabric from coloured fleece.  From your felted fabric you will then create an embellished table runner or centre piece.  Embellishing and assembling techniques will include needle felting – a process using a barbed needle to attach the fibers.  This class is a great introduction to wet and dry felting.  Fun too!

Traditional Newfoundland Rug Hooking Full!
Years ago hooked mats were found in almost every Newfoundland home. Now you can learn the skills and techniques to recapture the tradition. This hands on class will show you how to attach burlap to a frame, transfer your design, select and cut fabrics, and learn how to hook your choice of design. You’ll learn the basics while completing a small rug/wall hanging of your choice. Instruction will also cover finishing techniques and hanging methods. Register early, this class is one of our most popular.

Jewellery Basics

Instructor Gina Rae Hoyles says “you will be surprised at just how easy it is to get started making your own jewellery”. In this introductory class Gina will show you how to get started, and provide helpful hints for sourcing materials and supplies. Instruction will include how to use glass beads and semi precious stones to make your own one of a kind pieces; and how to use crimps and tiger wire, to give your pieces that professional touch. Students will learn the basics of jewellery making and be given ample time to work on projects and to develop ideas under expert guidance.

Embroidery Study – Level 2
This is the second level in the five level thorough examination of embroidery and needlework. It includes; technical skills, design theory, and the historical context of each given style of needlework. Each level introduces new styles of embroidery and includes sampler projects and a final examination. You must have completed level one before continuing with level two. It takes approximately two and a half years to complete all five levels of the program. This course will introduce you to the basic stitches in frestyle embroidery. You will learn to master back, stem, feather, couching, knotted and chain stitches while exploring the creative potential of each stitich. You will complete a small project suitable for hanging. Knitting Classes


Knitting Basics
Always thought you would like to knit, but never got around to it. In just four evenings you can learn the basics of knitting: knit, purl, cast on, cast off, increase, decrease, how to fix mistakes and  follow simple stitch patterns. This course is designed as four short classes so you can go home and practice your new skills, and return the following week for troubleshooting.

Local Colour for Knitters cancelled
This class will get you started exploring the wonderful world of natural dyes on wool. Susan Furneaux will guide you through the creation of lushcious colour using local and exotic plants, and nontoxic mordants. Instruction will include plant identification, mordants, dye recipes and dye methods. Perfect for adding a little bit of local colour to your knitted Christmas gifts! Participants will dye six skeins of yarn in a palette of beautiful colours. All materials and dyes provided.

Design your own Knitted Guernsey cancelled
A staple garment of the 19th Century British fisherman, the Guernsey is characterized by it’s distinctive knit/purl patterns, the guernsey or gansey is a great starting point for contemporary sweater design. Knit entirely in one piece (no sewing), with underarm gussets and dropped shoulders. This comfortable and stylish sweater will make the perfect Christmas gift for a loved one or for yourself. Susan Furneaux will guide you through the design process through sampler creation, tension swatches and pattern graphing. Participants must be confident with basic knitting skills. Materials for your sampler are included, students will be required to purchase wool and needles for their sweater. Materials will be discusses in the first class.
