Sewing Classes
Machine Sewing: An Introduction
This short course is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to get started machine sewing. You will learn machine set up, parts and accessories, cutting patterns, sewing straight and curved seams, finishing techniques and more. You will learn basic skills as you as you gain hands-on experience, follow a simple pattern, and complete elastic waist pyjama pants and a gorgeous tote bag. No experience required.
Bring your own machine or use one of ours.
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7-10 pm, August 17-26, 2010 (total of four evening classes)

Dye Techniques to Create Beautiful Fabrics & Yarns
Natural Dye Workshop
Join artist and craftsperson Susan Furneaux in a walk about town; collect up those plants and weeds found about the ankles and make some use of them. Under Susan’s expert instruction learn how to turn beautiful local plants into your very own natural dyes! In the second half of the class you will then useyour handmade dye to create inspiring and wonderful colours in fabrics and wool.

Traditional Newfoundland Rug Hooking
Years ago hooked mats were found in almost every Newfoundland home. Now you can learn the skills and techniques to recapture the tradition from local textile artist and rug hooker, Catherine McCausland.
Rug Hooking: Landscapes - Learn the best methods for representing natures variety of shades, tones and textures. Everything from the brightest flower to the darkest forest. New skills will broaden your understanding and comprehension on design techniques and successful recreation of images….and all in this one-day instructional workshop.

Rug Hooking: Portraits - Discover how to represent shading and highlights and variety in tone as you learn techniques specific to creating a successful portrait through rug hooking. These new skills will also better your understanding of how to recreate an existing image, or how to design with fabrics….and all in a one-day instrcutional workshop.

Rug Hooking: Beyond the Basics
This class is designed to help those with some experience rug hooking to further develop their skills. Instruction will cover choosing the right fabrics for your design, how to create dynamic colour, highlights, shadows, textures and value changes. Individuals will be challenged at their own level of experience and will determine the class content based on their needs and wants.
4 Tuesdays (over 6 weeks), 6:30-9:30pm, July 20 – August 24, 2010

Theatre Arts
Mini Theatre School (16-Adult)
In this 4 week course you will learn stagecraft and live the acting school experience. Learn theatre technique and experiment with others in the wonderful world of acting. Instruction will include voice and speech work, theatre games and stagecraft – experiment with improvisation as well as work with a script for character studies. Yopu will also have the chance to prepare scenes and monologues with partners. No experience is necessary but this is for the student looking for theatre arts skills and are ready to work for it!

Audition Techniques: A Workshop (16-Adult)

Take advantage of this great class and learn some hints and pointers to help you prepare for general reading auditions or to get a monologue into tip-top shape.In this 2 day workshop you will learn how to best choose your monologue and how to polish it – ready to get that part, how to deal with “cold readings”, as well as how to prepare sides for a film audition.
(Note: Please find a monologue that you like and bring it and we will work on it. If you can bring a copy of the play as well that you got the monologue out of.)

Printmaking: An Introduction
Learn a variety of printmaking techniques including monotype, collagraph and relief. Experiment and gain hands-on experience with artist Anita Singh creating a series of your own original printworks. Learn techniques for carving, creating relief ‘plates’ using styrofoam, easycut and linoleum. Also explore monotype, a painterly print medium and collagraph prints, made by building up a ‘plate’ using a collage-like process, learn how to ink your ‘plate’ and print by hand using a wooden spoon and an etching press.

Papermaking Workshop
Take an artistic approach to papermaking with artist Anita Singh. Experiment with how natural fibres (flowers, leaves, grass, corn husk, pineapple tops, onion and garlic skins…) can be transformed into works of art. Learn the step-by-step process in preparing the fibres to pulling sheets of unique handmade papers. Participants are encouraged to bring inclusions of wall paper, pressed plants, fabrics, lace etc.. (flat thin objects that won’t be damaged by water)

Book(art ) Making
Learn different methods and approaches to book making in this workshop with artist Anita Singh. Through examples, demonstration, handouts and hands-on experience, participants will learn how to make a variety of book structures using various techniques to complete their own unique books to be treasured for years to come.

Sewing: Garment Construction
This class is an opportunity to build on your basic machine sewing skills and start making your own clothes. Gina Rae will guide you through reading a pattern (one of 3 instructor chosen projects), cutting and the basic techniques and methods of garment sewing. The chosen projects will cover zippers, sleeves or pant legs, button holes and hemming/finishing techniques. Learn to sew with confidence!
