Textiles: Craft & Apparel Design

- A Textiles Photoshoot
Individuals with creative and artistic interests will learn by doing as they gain skills in apparel construction, design, drawing, embroidery, knitting, print and dye techniques, quilting, sewing, weaving, and related areas.
The first year is one of exploration where many different skills, media and techniques are introduced. Innovation and creativity are encouraged through contemporary applications of traditional skills and the incorporation of non-traditional materials into project ideas. The second year is an opportunity to focus on two studio areas. Students may choose to concentrate their studies in the area(s) of apparel construction, embroidery and quilt, knit, print and dye, and/or weave with a focus toward developing technical skills. Both years are supported with lecture courses in art history, craft history, computer applications, entrepreneurial studies, portfolio development, production coordination, proposal writing, and writing for the arts.
This program also strives for innovative training that reaches beyond the classroom. Emphasis on “real life” experiences include involvement in local fine craft and design fairs, gallery exhibitions, commissions and fashion shows, as well as a national wholesale trade show. Each September begins with a weekend-long craft retreat in Upper Amherst Cove, Bonavista Bay. Students get to know their classmates and instructors; view the work of established artists; understand how successful craft businesses operate and learn about potential careers in the craft industry.
Graduates of Textiles have a solid foundation to build a career as an independent, self employed craftsperson or artist. It may also inspire individuals to pursue further studies in textiles, art history, costume design, fashion design, fine art, graphic arts, visual art, and/or related disciplines.
Employment opportunities may exist in arts organizations, apparel manufacturing, craft production, education, galleries, museums, living heritage sites, and/or related fields.
The Textiles program is located in the heart of downtown St. John’s, at the Anna Templeton Centre for Craft, Art and Design. The building is a fully restored national historic site with full accessibility and four floors of purpose built studios. The Anna Templeton Centre is a hub of art and craft activity and was recently recognized as an Industry Leader with an Atlantic Canada Craft Award of Excellence.
