Creative Summer Camps! (2009)

Art and Craft (7-11 Years)
Instructors: A variety of artist teach this class Full or 1/2 Days . July 6-10 OR July 20-24 OR July 27-31 FULL OR August 17-21 OR August 31 – September 4

A variety of activities are covered in this popular class for budding artists. Each week a new project is introduced under the expert guidance of professional artist instructors. In this mixed media program children work with a variety of drawing materials, use paints, learn print making, collage techniques, build sculpture, and more. Outings to nearby galleries and parks may be incorporated, weather permitting. New and returning students are welcome!

Weaving (9-14 years)
Instructor: Melissa Tarrant
Mornings . August 17 – 21

Weaving fabric is a whole lot of fun and in this class you will learn the step by step process of weaving on a floor model loom. Using plain weave and twill you will design and complete a set of mug rugs and a cotton scarf. This class is great for students who have tried card weaving or have weaving on a loom  in the past and loved it!  Patience is required for this class.

Sketching and Painting (7-10 years)

Afternoons . July 27-31 FULL OR August 17 – 21

Learn about colour theory, paint application, design elements and composition while completing a series of drawings and paintings. Class includes experimentation with a variety of drawing materials (pencil, charcoal, pastels…) plus acrylic, watercolour, and tempera paints. Images will be inspired by a variety of subject matter and completed under expert guidance. This small class is perfect for any level of experience, including beginners. Subject matter will be tailored to the classes interests.

Jr. Art Explorers (5 and 6 Years)
Instructor: Laura Buchholz Mornings 9am – 12noon . July 13-17 FULL OR July 27-31 FULL OR August 17-21 FULL

This introduction to art is designed specifically for 5 and 6 year olds. It is a mixed media class in which children work with paint, collage, print making, drawing materials and more. Basic art concepts, terms and techniques are introduced and built upon. Classes include group and individual instruction encouraging students to challenge their own level of experience.

Play Building (8-12 years)
Instructor: Chris Dredzic
Full Days . July 6-10 OR July 13-17 FULL OR August 10-14 FULL

Develop skills in performing arts and build a play with theatre instructor Chris Driedzic.  This week long camp will include theatre games and exercises, centered around the creation of an original play.  Students will learn acting skills, character building and plot development.  The week will culminate in a studio performance open to family and friends.

Tricks of the Trade (9-13 years)
Instructor: Peter Duchemin
Full Days . July 20 – 24 FULL

A great introduction to unusual performing with magician and circus performer Peter Duchemin. Students will learn the basics of juggling, coin magic, minor contortion stunts, card tricks and more as they develop a repertoire of great tricks, a performance personality, and the confidence to put on a show! Classes will include instruction, free practice, and theatre games. During the final class families and friends will be invited for an informal studio performance.

Words and Imagery (8-12 years)
Instructor: Kevin Hehir and Anita Singh
Mornings . July 13 – 17 FULL

This camp is ideal for kids who enjoy expressing themselves through writing and visual arts. In the first two days, students will be inspired to write short stories and/or poems under the guidance of professional writer Kevin Hehir. During the remaining days students will work with artist Anita Singh to create illustrations for their writings, using printmaking and collage techniques. The words and imagery will be pulled together in the creation of one-of-a-kind books to be treasured for years to come.

Creative Writing (9-14 years)

Explore fun new writing techniques and creative ways to develop new ideas and story lines in this exciting class with Kevin Hehir. Students will learn about, and tour local historic sites, for inspiration and writing on site. This class is far from your ordinary English class and perfect for young writing enthusiasts!

Mornings . July 20 – 24

Sketching Out (10-14 years)

Afternoons . July 13-17 FULL OR August 24-28 FULL

This class is for drawing enthusiasts of varying backgrounds and skill levels. Students will learn about composition, tone and value using contour lines, cross hatching, shading and negative space. Students will be guided under professional artist, while exploring depth using light and shadow, and introduced to drawing with colour using oil pastels and watercolour. Students will use these techniques to render images from still life, create reproductions and use observational methods to create a self portrait.

 

Fashion Camps!

*Each fashion camp is different and covers different projects and techniques. Students are welcome to sign up for more then one week. Sewing machines are provided, or you may bring your own machine from home. Some materials and supplies are included; additional supplies may be required.

Fashion Design: An Introduction to Machine Sewing (8-12 years)

Afternoons . July 6-10 FULL OR August 17-21 FULL

See your vision through to the runway. Machine sewing is fundamental to fashion design, in this class youth will gain hands-on instruction, and learn the basics. Instruction will cover different types of fabric, textures, drape, colour theory and design techniques.  Then learn techniques to create and embellish your design. At the end of the class participants will show their creations on the runway for family and friends. No previous experience required.

Fashion Design: An Introduction to Machine Sewing and Accessories (8-12 years)
Instructors: Gina Rae Hoyles or Melissa Tarrant

This camp is similar to the introduction to Machine Sewing class, with the addition of methods and techniques of making accessories. In this camp students will also learn about colour trends and patterns, having to opportunity to create their own fabrics. Machine sewing is fundamental to fashion design, in this class youth will gain hands-on instruction, and learn the basics. Instruction will cover different types of fabric, textures, drape, colour theory and design techniques.  Then learn techniques to create and embellish your design. At the end of the class participants will show their creations on the runway for family and friends. No previous experience required.

Fashion Design: Machine Sewing Beyond the Basics (10-14 years)
Instructors: Melissa Tarrant or Gina Rae Hoyles
Mornings . July 27-31 FULL OR August 24-28 FULL

This class is perfect for youth who have basic machine sewing skills, and are ready to move on to more complex projects and technique development. Participants will work from a pattern and with hands-on instruction learn to sew a project of their choice. At the end of the class, participants will show off their creations on the runway for family and friends. Previous sewing experience is recommended.

 

Classes for Teens!

*Teen classes place emphasis on developing a professional artistic vocabulary. Classes are suitable for new students who  wish to begin exploring the arts or experienced students looking to further develop their skills and techniques. New and continuing students welcome!Weather permitting, students will have the opportunity to work outside, on location. Field trips will include nearby areas of interest to sketch St. john’s unique cityscape and seascape, to public parks and gardens, or to local historic sites.
Drawing, Painting and Pastels (13-17 years)

In this course students will learn a variety of traditional and alternative techniques while working with pencil, paint and soft pastels. Students will be encouraged to create new conceptual ideas while developing and sharpening their skills. This class is a great opportunity to explore a variety of mediums and an assortment of subject matter.

Sketching (13-17 years)

Creativity and self-expression will be encouraged in this sketching class designed for teens, enhancing individual style and technique. Students will be instructed on a group and individual level, tailoring to each student’s skill set. Under professional guidance participants will study the principle techniques of line, shading and texture while exploring a variety of subjects.

Important Day Camp Information

Fees: Full Day $160 . Half Days (mornings/afternoons) $90
Full Day = 9am – 4pm . Mornings = 9am – 12noon . Afternoons = 1-4pm
*All supplies are included with the exception of the Fashion Design camps – participants will be advised of additional materials required on the first day.

We employ experienced arts professionals to instruct all of our programming. Instructors are chosen for their knowledge, skill and enthusiasm. Class emphasis is on hands-on learning, skill building, individual expression and design. Students are provided instruction and feedback at a level appropriate to their own development and interest. Camps are intended to offer inspiration and skill-building while remaining low-stress, enjoyable and fun.

A supervised lunch period is offered from 12 noon to 1 pm daily. Snacks are recommended for both morning and afternoon sessions. (No nut or nut products please!) Please be health and environment conscious.

Please inform us of allergies, as well as any medical concerns and restrictions.

Drop off time is from 8:30 to 9:00 am for morning sessions. Afternoon participants must be picked up no later then 4:30 pm.

Kids should dress comfortably and be prepared to get messy! Old clothes and/or smocks are recommended.

Supervised outings are an important part of daily camp activities. Please ensure that children come prepared to go outdoors (with sun block, hats, sweaters, comfortable shoes for walking…) If there is a reason why your child is unable to participate in outings, please inform us prior to the camp start date.

Space is limited in our camps, so register in advance. A minimum number of 7 participants is required for camps to go ahead.
