Summer Camps for Budding Artists

Important Day Camp Information
We employ experienced arts professionals to instruct all of our programming. Instructors are chosen for their knowledge, skill and enthusiasm. Class emphasis is on hands-on learning, skill building, individual expression and design. Students are provided instruction and feedback at a level appropriate to their own development and interest. Camps are intended to offer inspiration and skill-building while remaining low-stress, enjoyable and fun.
Morning drop off is from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. for morning sessions
Afternoon sessions end at 4:00, we like participants to be picked up before 4:30 p.m.
A supervised lunch period is offered from 12 noon to 1 pm daily. Snacks are recommended for both morning and afternoon sessions. No nut or nut products please! Please be health and environment conscious.
Please inform us of allergies, as well as any medical concerns and restrictions.
Kids should dress comfortably and be prepared to get messy! Old clothes are recommended.
Supervised outings to nearby locations may be included. All outings are depend on fine weather. On nice days please be prepared for kids to to go outside and send them along with sun block, hats, sweaters, and comfortable shoes. If there is a reason why your child is unable to participate in outings, please inform us prior to the camp start date.
Junior Art Explorers (5-6 years)
Monday-Friday, 9-1 2 noon, for the weeks of July 19-23, August 9-13, and/or August 23-27

Fee: $90 (includes HST and supplies) Instructors: A variety of artist teach this classThis introduction to art is designed specifically for 5 and 6 year olds. It’s an opportunity for budding artists to work with paint, collage, print making, drawing materials, and more. Basic art concepts, terms, and techniques are introduced and built upon. Classes include group and individual instruction to encourage participants to be creative and explore new ideas.
Tricks of the Trade (9-13 years)
Monday-Friday, 9 am – 4 pm, July 5-9 and/or August 23-27 Instructor: Peter DucheminA great introduction to unusual performing with magician and circus performer Peter Duchemin. Students will learn the basics of juggling, coin magic, minor contortion stunts, card tricks and more as they develop a repertoire of great tricks, a performance personality, and the confidence to put on a show! Classes will include instruction, free practice, and theatre games. On Friday afternoon there will informal studio performance/ magic show for family and friends to come and see.
Art & Craft Camp (7-11 years)
Monday-Friday, 9 am – 4 pm (with an option to attend half days also available – mornings 9-12, afternoons 1-4)July 5-9, July 12-16, July 26-30, August 9-13, August 23-27, and/or Aug 30-Sept 3
The all-time favourite camp for budding artists. Kids enjoy a variety of craft and art activities to make some very cool projects. There’s lots of opportunity for drawing, painting, print making, and collage, with activities such as felting, dye techniques, sculpture (and more) thrown in to make it all lots of fun. Each week is different – with several different artists sharing the teaching and sharing their skills with the kids. Outings to nearby galleries and parks may be incorporated, weather permitting. New and returning students are welcome! Participants may enrol for full days or half days (mornings/afternoons). This camp may also be combined with another half day camp to make a full day of activity for that given week. Lunch is supervised 12 – 1 pm.

Art & Craft Camp is full for the week of August 9-13. For the week of Augsut 23-27, we only have available the option of attending afternoons only (i.e. Monday-Friday, 1-4 pm). Currently, all options (1/2 days mornings/afternoons and/or full days) are available for the week of Aug 30-Sept 3

Cartooning & Comics (10-15 years)

Instructor: Wallace Ryan
An introduction to the art of comic books, cartoons and graphic novels. In addition to developing drawing skills, participants will learn the basics of pencilling, inking and lettering. Both North American and Japanese styles of comics will be covered.
This class also includes a field trip to Downtown Comics.
Art Camp (7-11 years)
Sorry…this camp is full Monday-Friday, 9 am – 4 pm, August 16-20 Instructors: Jenny Dwyer and Anita Singh Spend a week experimenting with all the finest forms of art while still getting a little messy. Learn the basics of drawing, painting, collage and printmaking in this inspiring and exploratory camp! Take walking trips to areas downtown and sketch the sites, then come back to the school and turn your sketches into paintings, prints and more!Weave Away (10-15 years)

Instructor: Maggie Pearson
Weaving fabric is a whole lot of fun and in this class you will learn the step by step process of weaving on a floor model loom. Using plain weave and twill you will design and complete a set of mug rugs and a cotton scarf. This class is great for students who have tried card weaving or have weaving on a loom in the past and loved it! Patience is required for this class.
To Dye For (10-15 years)

Learn the basics of fabric dye; techniques for creating fun and inspiring patterns and designs as well as experiment with other great wet and wild crafts! (Those taking the weaving class could even dye their own threads!)

Play Building (8-12 years)
Sorry…both weeks of drama camp are full Monday-Friday, 9 am – 4 pm, July 26-30 and/or August 16-20 Instructor: Greg KingDevelop skills in performing arts and build a play with theatre instructor Greg King. This week long camp will include theatre games and exercises, centred around the creation of an original play. Students will learn acting skills, character building and plot development. The week will culminate in a studio performance on Friday afternoon for family and friends to come and see.
Words & Imagery (8-12 years)

Monday- Friday, 9 am – 12 noon, July 19-23 Instructor: Kevin Hehir and Anita SinghThis camp is ideal for kids who enjoy expressing themselves through writing and visual arts. In the first two days, students will be inspired to write short stories and/or poems under the guidance of professional writer Kevin Hehir. During the remaining days students will work with artist Anita Singh to create illustrations for their writings, using printmaking and collage techniques. The words and imagery will be pulled together in the creation of one-of-a-kind books to be treasured for years to come.
Sketching Out (9-12 years)

This class is for drawing enthusiasts of varying backgrounds and skill levels. Students will learn about composition, tone and value using contour lines, cross hatching, shading and negative space. Students will be guided under professional artist, while exploring depth using light and shadow, and introduced to drawing with colour using oil pastels and watercolour. Students will use these techniques to render images from still life, create reproductions and use observational methods to create a self portrait.
Studio Art & Beyond: Drawing and Sculpture (10-15 years)
Monday-Friday, 1-4 pm, July 19-23

This class is designed to give young artists an active and challenging week of both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional mark making, craft and art approaches. Go on supervised outings to sketch nearby sculptures, buildings and your surroundings; experiment with fabric and model-drawing, air dry clay, music affects and still life observation. The class will also work on collaborative drawings and 3-D games!
Writing For Graphic Novels & Comic Books Camp (10-15 years)

Do you have a story you would like to tell? Try telling it through comics! This creative writing course is designed to get you started. All writing and cartoon enthusiasts are welcome!
Fashion Camps!
See your vision through to the runway. Machine sewing is fundamental to fashion design, in this class youth will gain hands-on instruction, and learn the basics. At the end of the class participants will show their creations on the runway for family and friends. Sewing machines are provided, or you may bring your own machine from home. Some materials and supplies are included; additional supplies may be required.
Sew Fashionable

August 16-20 Hand-Dyed Fashions: This sewing/fashion camp begins in the dye studio. Participants will dye their fabric before sewing it into cool garments and/or messenger bags. No previous sewing experience is required.
Please note: The morning session (9-12 noon) is full and the afternoons session (1-4pm) has been changed to accommodate kids 8-14 years.

Classes for Teens!
Teen classes place emphasis on developing a professional artistic vocabulary. Classes are suitable for new students who wish to begin exploring the arts or experienced students looking to further develop their skills and techniques. New and continuing students welcome! Weather permitting, students will have the opportunity to work outside, on location. Field trips will include nearby areas of interest to sketch St. john’s unique cityscape and seascape, to public parks and gardens, or to local historic sites.Sketching & Painting (12-16 years)
Monday- Friday, 1-4 pm, July 26-30 Instructor: Jenny Dwyer Sorry, this camp is fullLearn about colour theory, paint application, design elements and composition while completing a series of drawings and paintings. Class includes experimentation with a variety of drawing materials (pencil, charcoal, pastels…) plus acrylic, watercolour, and tempera paints. Images will be inspired by a variety of subject matter and completed under expert guidance. This small class is perfect for any level of experience, including beginners. Subject matter will be tailored to the classes interests.
