PERFORMING ARTS
Magic: An Introduction (13-17 years)
This class is a great introduction to performing close-up and impromptu magic with local magician Peter Duchemin. Students will learn how to do magic tricks with coins, cards, ropes, and other objects. Students will be encouraged to invent their own tricks and to watch and give feedback on each other. Magic is more than doing tricks; it is performing them clearly and in a way that it is engaging as well. Classes include instruction, free practice, and theatre games. During the final class families and friends will be invited for an informal studio performance.

ART CLASSES
Preschool Art Discovery (3-5 years)
Preschoolers will make important discoveries as they participate in art and craft activities with instructor Laura Buchholz. Participants will experiment with a variety of mark-making techniques using a variety of different drawing materials and paints. Instruction will also include a basic introduction to colour mixing, stitchery, clay and collage. Creative games, story telling, group circle times for songs, and show-n-tell are also included in the fun.

Jr. Art Explorers (5 & 6 years)
This introduction to art is designed specifically for 5 and 6 year olds. It is a mixed media class in which children work with paint, collage, print making, drawing materials and more. Instructor Laura Buchholz teaches basic art concepts, terms, skills and techniques. Classes include both group and individual instruction encouraging participants to express their creativity.

Art and Craft (7-11 years)
Budding artists use their hands to create a series fun projects using a variety of drawing materials and other creative media. Activities will include drawing, painting, print making, collage techniques, sculpture, and more. Outings to nearby galleries and parks may be incorporated, weather permitting. Classes include both group and individual instruction encouraging participants to express their creativity and challenge their current skills. New and returning students are welcome to this class taught by Laura Buchholz.

Sketching Out (9-13 years)
This class is for drawing enthusiasts of varying backgrounds and skill levels. Students will learn about composition, tone and value using contour lines, cross hatching, shading and negative space. John McDonald will guide students while exploring depth using light and shadow, and introduce drawing with colour using oil pastels and watercolour. Students will use these techniques to render images from still life, create reproductions and use observational methods to create a self portrait.

Sketching, Painting & Pastels (13-17 years)
An opportunity for participants to learn a variety of traditional and contemporary artistic techniques while working with pencil, paint (watercolour and acrylic), and oil pastels. Artist/instructor John Macdonald encourages his students to create new conceptual ideas while developing and challenging their drawing and painting skills. Both group and individual instruction will encourage participants to express their creativity and gain experience working in a variety of mdeia. New and returning students are welcome!

CARTOONING CLASSES
Cartooning (9-13 years)
Cartoonist Julie Whalen instructs this creative class for cartoon and comic book enthusiasts, and for those who love to draw. Increase your knowledge of cartooning and learn drawing skills as you create human and animal figures, then design environments that suit your characters. Learn techniques for portraying fun character expressions and illustrate larger then life dynamic scenes. Julie will “go out of her way to ensure students understand and absorb the concepts covered.”

Cartooning and Comics (13 – 17 years)
An introduction to the art of comic books, cartoons and graphic novels. In addition to developing drawing skills, participants will learn the basics of penciling, inking and lettering. Both North American and Japanese styles of comics will be covered.
This class also includes a field trip to Downtown Comics.

The Art of Comic Book Collecting
This is a new course dedicated to the wonderful hobby of comic book collecting. Participants will cover the mechanics of preservation, storage, grading and the history of comic books. Workshop includes a field trip to Downtown Comics on Duckworth Street to study the structure of a comic book shop.
All comic book enthusiasts are welcome!

Girls ONLY Cartooning (10 – 17 years)
This workshop is for girls interested in drawing and writing for comic books and cartooning. Students will cover both North American and Japanese comic book art forms with an emphasis on storytelling.

Creative Writing: Graphic Novels and Comic Books (10 years and up)
Do you have a story you would like to tell? Try telling it through comics! This creative writing course is designed to get you started. (This course could also be of interest to those who are writing for film as a lot of the same principles apply to both kinds of writing.) All writing and cartoon enthusiasts are welcome!

Comic Jam
Fridays, 7-9 pm, January 8, February 5, March 5, April 2, etc…
Join local cartoonist Wallace Ryan on the first Friday evening of the month (7-9 pm) beginning January 8th for a cartooning open studio. Bring your current project and work on it in the company of fellow cartoon enthusiasts. Wallace will also have different topics of discussion so that each Comic Jam helps budding cartoonists to develop their drawing, lettering, and storytelling skills. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the world of professional cartooning and meet new people with a common interest. Comic Jams are free and welcome individuals with all levels of cartooning experience, young and old.
SEWING CLASSES
Mother & Daughter Sewing Classes
(for daughters 5-8 years with their moms)
An opportunity for mothers and daughters to learn sewing skills together from instructor Jessica Waterman. Participants will help one another as they go step-by-step through the process of sewing coordinating mother and daughter aprons and purses. No experience required.

Fashion Design & Accessories: An Introduction (8-12 years)
See your vision through to the runway. Machine sewing is fundamental to fashion design and participants learn basic sewing skills through the completion of fashionable projects. Instructor Jessica Waterman will also talk about the design process and how to use creative techniques to individualize your projects. In the last class, participants will present their creations in a fashion show for family and friends. No previous experience required.

An opportunity for young fashionistas to develop their sewing and design skills . Participants will learn by doing as they complete fashion projects and use creative techniques to individualize their projects. Previous experience and the completion of an introductory fashion/sewing class is required. Jessica Waterman teaches this class.
